Bob German will be presenting "Is it Safe to Customize SharePoint?"
Session Abstract

Since 2007, SharePoint has been billed as a platform for developing custom solutions. And who wants to be limited to just what’s in the box? The thing is, sometimes the customizations break when you upgrade SharePoint, which might be at any moment if you’re in SharePoint Online. Just ask anyone who used the "Fab 40" web templates and then couldn’t upgrade from SharePoint 2007! It’s gotten so crazy that some people just won’t customize SharePoint at all, even as new development technologies are introduced.

In this talk, we’ll review all the major options for customizing SharePoint since 2003, and the strengths and pitfalls of each. You’ll learn which options are "safe" and which are headed for a long trip down a short pier. This talk is for everyone who makes decisions about SharePoint – admins, business decision-makers, architects, and developers alike. You’ll learn what’s possible from each type of customization, and what the future has in store. The goal is to make it easy for you to navigate through all the options without stepping on any land mines!

About the Speaker

Bob German is Principal Architect at BlueMetal Architects, where he leads SharePoint architecture and development engagements for enterprise customers. Bob has been developing on the SharePoint platform since it was called “Site Server”, and is a Microsoft MVP for Office Development and Office Services and Servers. Over the last few years, Bob has demonstrated "future-proof" client side solutions that allow code reuse from legacy SharePoint to the Add-in model and the forthcoming SharePoint Framework.

Prior to joining BlueMetal, Bob was an architect at the Microsoft Technology Center in Boston, MA; he also worked for Microsoft Consulting Services building and performance tuning web sites and other networking solutions.

Boston Area SharePoint Users Group February 12th, 2014 Meeting

BASPUG_195square_initials

The Boston Area SharePoint Users Group (BASPUG) was founded to bring together like minds to network and share their experiences, triumphs, and tribulations around Microsoft SharePoint, to provide a community platform for Boston area SharePoint users, administrators, developers, architects, of all experience levels, even brand new to SharePoint, to share their knowledge with the community. We meet on the 2nd Wednesday of every month at the Microsoft New England Research and Development Center in Cambridge, MA.

Joel Oleson will be presenting "Your Yammer Enterprise Social Journey"
Session Abstract

So much to think about. In this session we’ll break it down. SharePoint 2013, Yammer and Office 365 product families bring new capabilities for content sharing, finding, organizing, and authoring. They also create new challenges. The move to the cloud and the integration of SharePoint and Yammer—the enterprise social network—have made this release very profound and disruptive to the business. In this session, we’ll dig into planning and strategy for social architectures around both business process and the technologies to help ensure compliance and success. Social enterprise technology is transformative and will lead to more agile business when used correctly but disaster and chaos when not used properly.

About Joel…

Blogger, traveller, and top social media influencer, Joel has built communities all over the world and travelled to over 140 countries since 2008, including keynotes on all continents. Joel is director of technical evangelism at ViewDo Labs, a social analytics platform. He was the first SharePoint administrator ever and spent seven years at Microsoft, including a few years on the SharePoint team. This past year, as a 13-year SharePoint veteran, he was awarded top SharePoint blog and #1 influencer in the community by Forbes study. Joel is co-founder of many community efforts—SPYam Yammer community (4500 members strong) and Sharing The Point (a community building and training group designed to help underserved countries). You can find his popular technical bog at http://www.collabshow.com and his travel blog at http://travelingepic.com and on Twitter: @joeloleson

Jason Himmelstein will be presenting "ITPro’s taking the SharePoint 2013 Red Pill"
Session Abstract

With every new version of SharePoint come changes that either rock our world or make us scratch our heads and say "WHAT THE WHAT?!?"

If you are bold enough to want to adventure past the surface and are ready for the good, the bad, the great & the somewhat scary, join us as we deep dive into the rabbit hole of ITPro changes that are coming with SharePoint 2013.

Come on this journey as we:

  • explore changes to the service applications (including search)
  • what is new for visual upgrade
  • how SQL 2012 changes the storage scenario
  • take a look at the maturity of the Office Web Apps
  • examine how the new App Model will impact us
  • discuss the new workflow model
  • discuss what the "Claims First" model is going to do to our world.

By the end of this session you should be as excited for SharePoint 2013, but as to keep in mind twisted take on what Morpheus said: "Unfortunately, no one can just be told what the SharePoint 2013 is. You have to see it for yourself."

And when something in the business changes, modifying the applications to keep up is easy.

K2 tools are built on Microsoft technology and because K2 users actually complete work in the Microsoft programs they already know — like SharePoint and Visual Studio — little training is required and user buy-in is quick. In fact, K2 provides more Microsoft integration points than any other software product in the space.

PRESENTER
The presenter for our next meeting is Christian Buckley, a SharePoint MVP and Director of Product Evangelism for Axceler. He will be presenting "Building End User Productivity into your SharePoint Planning".

Session Abstract
SharePoint Myth #1 is that out of the box will give you everything your teams need to be productive. SharePoint Myth #2 is that you need to customize to make your teams productive. But how can this be? While these things may sound mutually exclusive, the real problem is your approach to solving your business problems. Far too many SharePoint plans begin with a specific outcome in mind (deploy SharePoint) rather than a clear picture of the business problems to be solved. When you understand the business problems, you can begin to plan out your solutions. This session will outline some of the leading productivity solutions in SharePoint 2010 (with a peek into 2013) and cover some planning best practices to help your team get more out of SharePoint – more quickly.

About Christian
Christian Buckley is Director of Product Evangelism for Axceler, where he drives partner and community development. Christian previously worked at Microsoft as a Senior Program Manager on the enterprise hosted SharePoint platform team (now part of BPOS), and also managed an engineering team in advertising operations. Prior to Microsoft, Christian was managing director of a regional consulting firm in the San Francisco East Bay, participated in several startups, and worked with IBM, HP, Cisco, Matsushita, Solectron, Seagate and other large hi-tech and manufacturing firms to deploy collaboration and supply chain solutions. He is co-author of three books on IBM Rational Software configuration management and defect tracking solutions, and can be found online at www.buckleyplanet.net and www.twitter.com/buckleyplanet
