Boston Office 365 Users Group coming in May!

With Microsoft’s focus on Office 365, and it being the largest product in history for them (surpassing SharePoint on-premises licensing), a few great minds here in the Boston area started talking a few months ago, about creating an Office 365 users group (not just covering SharePoint Online, but Lync, Exchange, Yammer, and whatever else gets tossed out onto the buffet line that is Office 365!).

Well, we have done just that, and are having our inaugural meeting on Thursday, May 22nd, at the Microsoft New England Research and Development Center (N.E.R.D.) from 6pm to 8pm. We will have Chris Bortlik, a Microsoft Office 365 Technology Specialist, kicking us off with his session “Introduction to Office 365”. See below for an abstract and bio for the session.

We will be having regular monthly meetings on the third Thursday of each month, so stay tuned for more as we build out our schedule of great speakers and topics going forward!

Our website is up (work in progress), but please sign up for our mailing list to be notified about future meetings and information about the group! http://www.bostono365usergroup.com/

Abstract

Office 365 is the fastest growing product in Microsoft’s history. Come to this session to learn what Office 365 is and how your organization can get started leveraging it today. During this talk we will cover the following topics:

  • Office 365 functional overview, focusing on Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Yammer, Lync Online, Office Online, mobile applications, and Office 365 ProPlus
  • Office 365 architecture fundamentals, including identity management, authentication options, browser, and device requirements
  • Office 365 admin center
  • Office 365 service descriptions
  • Staying up to date with Office 365 service announcements and updates
  • Office 365 FastTrack deployment model
  • Key Office 365 training links and resources

Bio

Chris Bortlik works at Microsoft as an Office 365 technology architect. He works with Enterprise customers and partners in the Northeast in a technical role focused on SharePoint, Office, Exchange, Lync, Yammer, and other parts of Office 365. Chris is an “Insider” within Microsoft and works closely with the Office 365 product team. He holds the SharePoint MCITP and MCTS certifications. Jason Himmelstein will be presenting "ITPro’s taking the SharePoint 2013 Red Pill"
Session Abstract

With every new version of SharePoint come changes that either rock our world or make us scratch our heads and say "WHAT THE WHAT?!?"

If you are bold enough to want to adventure past the surface and are ready for the good, the bad, the great & the somewhat scary, join us as we deep dive into the rabbit hole of ITPro changes that are coming with SharePoint 2013.

Come on this journey as we:

  • explore changes to the service applications (including search)
  • what is new for visual upgrade
  • how SQL 2012 changes the storage scenario
  • take a look at the maturity of the Office Web Apps
  • examine how the new App Model will impact us
  • discuss the new workflow model
  • discuss what the "Claims First" model is going to do to our world.

By the end of this session you should be as excited for SharePoint 2013, but as to keep in mind twisted take on what Morpheus said: "Unfortunately, no one can just be told what the SharePoint 2013 is. You have to see it for yourself."

PRESENTER
The presenter for our next meeting is Christian Buckley, a SharePoint MVP and Director of Product Evangelism for Axceler. He will be presenting "Building End User Productivity into your SharePoint Planning".

Session Abstract
SharePoint Myth #1 is that out of the box will give you everything your teams need to be productive. SharePoint Myth #2 is that you need to customize to make your teams productive. But how can this be? While these things may sound mutually exclusive, the real problem is your approach to solving your business problems. Far too many SharePoint plans begin with a specific outcome in mind (deploy SharePoint) rather than a clear picture of the business problems to be solved. When you understand the business problems, you can begin to plan out your solutions. This session will outline some of the leading productivity solutions in SharePoint 2010 (with a peek into 2013) and cover some planning best practices to help your team get more out of SharePoint – more quickly.

About Christian
Christian Buckley is Director of Product Evangelism for Axceler, where he drives partner and community development. Christian previously worked at Microsoft as a Senior Program Manager on the enterprise hosted SharePoint platform team (now part of BPOS), and also managed an engineering team in advertising operations. Prior to Microsoft, Christian was managing director of a regional consulting firm in the San Francisco East Bay, participated in several startups, and worked with IBM, HP, Cisco, Matsushita, Solectron, Seagate and other large hi-tech and manufacturing firms to deploy collaboration and supply chain solutions. He is co-author of three books on IBM Rational Software configuration management and defect tracking solutions, and can be found online at www.buckleyplanet.net and www.twitter.com/buckleyplanet

Please note the date change for this month’s meeting!!

December 12th, 2011 Meeting Information – Cambridge

PRESENTER
The presenter for our next meeting is Richard Harbridge, Senior SharePoint Evangelist for Allin Consulting. He will be presenting "Is Your SharePoint Really Healthy? What’s The Right Prescription?"

Session Abstract
In many organizations SharePoint is a critical enterprise platform. As an organization matures the platform must mature and grow along with it to ensure it can continue to meet/exceed the needs of the business. If the SharePoint implementation is unhealthy or has problems these will compound overtime and may lead to solution, project and potentially even platform failure. This talk is about how to ensure that never happens.

What we will discuss in this session:

  • A “SharePoint Health Check” which help will identify how “Healthy” your SharePoint Implementation is in the following areas:
    • SharePoint Infrastructure
    • SharePoint Performance
    • SharePoint Security
    • SharePoint Integration
    • SharePoint Search
    • SharePoint Taxonomy
    • SharePoint Governance
    • SharePoint User Adoption
    • SharePoint Usability
    • SharePoint Development
  • A “SharePoint Prescription” You will learn about many SharePoint Best Practices that can help make your SharePoint environment healthier based on the above mentioned areas.

About Richard
Richard Harbridge is an internationally recognized expert in Microsoft SharePoint and is a technology and business evangelist with deep expertise in information architecture, enterprise content management, and technology strategy. He has defined, architected, developed and successfully implemented well over a hundred SharePoint solutions from small implementations on a single server to over 80,000+ user implementations in international organizations.

As a sought-after speaker he often shares his insights, experiences, and advice around collaboration, knowledge management, social computing, ROI, governance, user adoption and training at many industry events.

Richard hopes to see you/speak with you at the Boston Area SharePoint User Group as it’s an amazing community where many people exchange and share experience, knowledge, and relationships to help us all become even better at our jobs and the things we are passionate about.

MEETING SPONSOR – Certeon
Certeon is the Application Performance Company. aCelera, our suite of software WAN optimization products delivers fast and secure data transfer for any user accessing any application, on any device, across any network.

As enterprises aim to make their IT infrastructure flexible for business agility, contain IT costs and deal with regulatory changes, they are adopting a number of initiatives:

  • Centralization of servers to data centers
  • Consolidation of hardware using virtualization
  • Reduction in the number of data centers
  • Increasing globalization with more telecommuters, road warriors and other remote workers
  • Transition to network based backup and disaster recovery network replication
  • Leveraging public cloud services

The IT infrastructure is going through an evolution and the Wide Area Network (WAN) is now the backbone of both private and public cloud services. Each of the initiatives listed above further drives more and more remote access to data. If nothing is done, user productivity drops as WAN links are clogged and costs go up as IT tries to increase WAN links as consumption rises.

In this new world WAN optimization is not an option but a necessity. At Certeon we believe WAN optimization should not be considered as a point solution to solve pain at a couple of remote sites; instead it should be thought of a strategic initiative for the entire infrastructure. When deployed across the board at all points of access, CIOs and IT administrators will no longer have to worry where the data and where the user are. Data will be available instantly at LAN like speeds anywhere in the world.

Our mission is to deliver best of breed WAN optimization and application acceleration technology at a cost that is value based such that enterprises and cloud providers can afford to deploy it at every point of access in the network. No longer should you have to worry about the network or where the data is located, you should have instant access to it no matter where you are. Our software is scalable to be installed in the largest enterprise or a cloud provider’s infrastructure.

Only a software solution can deliver the lowest Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) that CIOs are searching for. Some examples of how costs can be saved from software versus hardware based solution include remote installation to anywhere in the world, leveraging commodity hardware and corporate standards for sparing and maintenance, and maximizing consolidation initiatives like virtualization to reduce cooling, power and rack space costs.

SUSTENANCE
Food and beverages will be provided at the event.

RAFFLE PRIZES
We will be handing out raffle tickets at the BASPUG meetings.
