​Since 2007, SharePoint has been billed as a platform for developing custom solutions. And who wants to be limited to just what’s in the box? The thing is, sometimes the customizations break when you upgrade SharePoint, which might be at any moment if you’re in SharePoint Online. Just ask anyone who used the "Fab 40" web templates and then couldn’t upgrade from SharePoint 2007! It’s gotten so crazy that some people just won’t customize SharePoint at all, even as new development technologies are introduced.

In this talk, we’ll review all the major options for customizing SharePoint since 2003, and the strengths and pitfalls of each. You’ll learn which options are "safe" and which are headed for a long trip down a short pier. This talk is for everyone who makes decisions about SharePoint – admins, business decision-makers, architects, and developers alike. You’ll learn what’s possible from each type of customization, and what the future has in store. The goal is to make it easy for you to navigate through all the options without stepping on any land mines!​

About the Speaker

Bob German is Principal Architect at BlueMetal Architects, where he leads SharePoint architecture and development engagements for enterprise customers. Bob has been developing on the SharePoint platform since it was called “Site Server”, and is a Microsoft MVP for Office Development and Office Services and Servers. Over the last few years, Bob has demonstrated "future-proof" client side solutions that allow code reuse from legacy SharePoint to the Add-in model and the forthcoming SharePoint Framework.

Prior to joining BlueMetal, Bob was an architect at the Microsoft Technology Center in Boston, MA; he also worked for Microsoft Consulting Services building and performance tuning web sites and other networking solutions.

As organizations look to the future of their existing SharePoint environments, questions about hybrid deployments come up again and again. For this month’s #CollabTalk tweetjam, scheduled for May 29th at 9am Pacific / 12pm Eastern we have an all-start panel of experts who will be tackling this topic, CollabTalk May 2014answering questions, and sharing their real-life experiences. Our theme will be “What It Takes to Get Hybrid SharePoint Right,” and we want your questions and feedback during this one-hour online event.

As organizations begin to seriously consider the future of their existing SharePoint infrastructure, some are moving directly to the cloud and Office365, while others are looking to extend their infrastructure investments, protect sensitive data, and/or maintain the level of control they have over line of business (LOB) integrations and other customizations. The long-and-short of it is that hybrid SharePoint deployments will be around for some time, and Microsoft will continue to support on premises deployments for the foreseeable future. In this month’s tweetjam panel, we’ll talk about the business reasoning behind the decisions to go hybrid, while also shedding some light on the roadblocks and realities of keeping one foot on prem and the other foot in the cloud.

If you’re new to the tweetjam model, basically its an hour-long public conversation held on Twitter and using a shared hash tag, which is #CollabTalk. I will be presenting “Automating your Enterprise Application Deployments with PowerShell”.

Session Abstract

In enterprise application deployments to SharePoint, there are generally farms, or web applications that host specific applications for specific groups, rather than having just an all-in-one deployment. Often times, you do not have access to these other environments, and will need to pass the deployment baton off to the system administrators of those farms.

This session will walk you through how you can deploy your applications, without needing to have the administrator who will be deploying the application, have to do much more than type a few keys into the SharePoint Administration Console and press enter – and having full configuration and deployment of your custom SharePoint applications to other environments.

Boston Office 365 Group Launch

Are you curious about Office 365? What it is, how it can save you time and help you be more productive? Are you getting the full benefits of all that Office 365 has to offer?

One of the ways for people to get the most out of this new and constantly evolving suite of products is to have people to turn to; a place to go to explore new features and functionality or just learn more, share experiences and ask questions. Formal training is great (we strongly encourage ongoing training for users of the Office 365 suite of products), but there are times when you just want to interact with others or ask a simple question.

Help has arrived. Jornata is pleased to be a founding organizer of the Boston Office 365 User Group. Our co-organizers include Microsoft, Wellington Street Consulting, Slalom Consulting and Cognizant Technology Solutions. The group will met monthly, beginning on Thursday, May 22nd, and on the third Thursday of every month thereafter. The event will take place at Microsoft’s New England Research and Development Center (NERD) at One Memorial Drive in Cambridge. Attendance is free and food and beverages will be provided. You can learn more and register for the meeting or join the mailing list.

Fittingly, for the initial event, Microsoft’s Chris Bortlik will present an overview of Office 365. His discussion will include an overview of current Office 365 functionality, including Yammer, Lync Online, mobile applications and Office 365 Pro Plus. He’ll also explore administration and update issues. Chris is an Office 365 technology architect at Microsoft.

We want this to be your group. Feedback, ideas, and suggestions are welcome. What topics would you like to see the group address? I ran a tweetjam on a similar topic last summer, but wanted to touch on the topic once again because of the ESPC panel – and because we now have more details on Microsoft’s social strategy following the SharePoint Conference in Las Vegas last month. Specifically, Microsoft announced their new OfficeGraph technology, which plays a key role in the company’s efforts to identify, utilize, and measure social influence through various “listening” tools within the business and productivity platforms we use every day, like SharePoint, Outlook, Yammer, Dynamics CRM, and of course from our use of the internet to search, communicate and collaborate. It’s pretty simple – to identify social influence and do something with it, you need to track social activities….so OfficeGraph is a HUGE step in the right direction, and I’m pretty excited to see Microsoft innovate in this area.

imageFor an event that many believed would be lacking any real content, the SharePoint Conference earlier this month actually packed quite the punch – and many attendees have been saying it was one of the better conferences they’ve attended. I would have to agree. I went in with a number of questions, and goals for specific partner and Microsoft conversations, and the end result far surpassed my goals. You expect to drink from the networking fire hose at an event like this, but I think what caught many SharePoint experts off-guard was the increase in communication and openness coming from the product team around the roadmap.

In this installation of the monthly #CollabTalk tweetjam, our panelists and folks from the community will be sharing their key takeaways from #SPC14 in Las Vegas: what they expected, the hits and the misses, and where they think the SharePoint platform is going from here. The one-hour tweetjam will be held this Thursday, March 27th at 9am PDT / noon EDT.

Boston Office 365 Users Group coming in May!

With Microsoft’s focus on Office 365, and it being the largest product in history for them (surpassing SharePoint on-premises licensing), a few great minds here in the Boston area started talking a few months ago, about creating an Office 365 users group (not just covering SharePoint Online, but Lync, Exchange, Yammer, and whatever else gets tossed out onto the buffet line that is Office 365!).

Well, we have done just that, and are having our inaugural meeting on Thursday, May 22nd, at the Microsoft New England Research and Development Center (N.E.R.D.) from 6pm to 8pm. We will have Chris Bortlik, a Microsoft Office 365 Technology Specialist, kicking us off with his session “Introduction to Office 365”. See below for an abstract and bio for the session.

We will be having regular monthly meetings on the third Thursday of each month, so stay tuned for more as we build out our schedule of great speakers and topics going forward!

Abstract

Office 365 is the fastest growing product in Microsoft’s history. Come to this session to learn what Office 365 is and how your organization can get started leveraging it today. During this talk we will cover the following topics:

  • Office 365 functional overview, focusing on Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, Yammer, Lync Online, Office Online, mobile applications, and Office 365 ProPlus
  • Office 365 architecture fundamentals, including identity management, authentication options, browser, and device requirements

  • Staying up to date with Office 365 service announcements and updates

Bio

Chris Bortlik works at Microsoft as an Office 365 technology architect. He works with Enterprise customers and partners in the Northeast in a technical role focused on SharePoint, Office, Exchange, Lync, Yammer, and other parts of Office 365. Chris is an “Insider” within Microsoft and works closely with the Office 365 product team. He holds the SharePoint MCITP and MCTS certifications. Chris speaks frequently at Microsoft events (including the SharePoint Conference); is a contributing author of the "Essential SharePoint 2010" book; and a coauthor of the “Essential SharePoint 2013” book.
